Where
The Funds Are Invested
Donations to The Papal Foundation are immediately invested in the United
States at the direction of the Board of Trustees into a “Board Directed
Fund,” whose sole purpose is to assist the Holy Father reach out to
the needy.
We are highly sensitive to where we invest our donors’ contributions.
The Papal Foundation’s investment portfolio is reviewed regularly
for consistency with our investment criteria, which prohibit investing
in any companies that:
- Produce nuclear, chemical, or other weapons
- Produce, research, or develop contraceptive products
- Manufacture abortifacient products
- Contribute directly or through company-sponsored foundations
to Pro-Choice organizations, e.g., Planned Parenthood
- Use fetal tissue in testing, or have no formal policy prohibiting
its use, if applicable to their business
- Perform abortions
- Produce movies rated “R” or higher, have adult-only
Internet sites, or publish materials for adults only
- Operate establishments with live entertainment of a clearly
adult nature
- Produce music recordings which the companies themselves have
indicated contain lyrics of questionable content
Who Manages the Money
The funds for The Papal Foundation are managed and supervised by a two-tiered
Board of Trustees, which is national in scope. American Cardinals who
reside in the United States serve as ex-officio members of the Board.
Also several Archbishops, Bishops and laity from across the country
are elected to serve as Trustees.
How The Grants Are Determined
A request for a grant must come from an Ordinary or Major Religious Superior
to the Holy See’s Secretary of State. His staff reviews all the requests,
matching it against criteria set by the Holy Father, and narrowing the choices
to about one hundred. Then, the Secretary of State and the Holy Father review
the requests, narrowing the list still further, and make requests to The
Papal Foundation. The Trustees of The Papal Foundation determine the sum
of the individual grants awarded.
